Martijn Komdeur

Martijn lives and works in Amsterdam. He loves the city life, but is also passionate about escaping it, be it by travelling (he’s off to Indonesia early 2014) or by taking one of his fixies out for a ride. Both his highlights of the year.

BACKGROUND

If you blink you’ll miss him, ‘cause he rides at the speed of light with his bike. By no means is he hasty about life though: Martijn is one of those people that enjoy the little things.

His evenings and weekends are spent hanging out with friends, family, enjoying some good food, and throwing a party every now and then. New Year's Eve will be not much of a difference. Planned party location: rooftop in Amsterdam.

If you blink you’ll miss him, ‘cause he rides at the speed of light with his bike.

As for future prospects, if you ask him about his dreams, he’ll tell you that he’d like to build his own wooden boat one day. By hand, that is. For the upcoming year, he will just keep on rockin’ in a free world!

BACKGROUND

Born and raised in the Northern part of the Netherlands, but this year she made to our city. Obvious step, if you are an international model you need to be close to the airport at all times. Life became so much easier since then, so no wonder her big move is Mariska’s highlight of the year.

New Year's Eve

Subtly she describes New Year's Eve as “gloriously tacky”. Dislike isn’t even close to how she feels about this one night of the year, no - she absolutely hates it.

To avoid all the New Year's Eve drama she’ll spend the whole night in bed, head covered by a pillow, ears filled with earplugs. Well, there’s no accounting for taste right?

THE RETURN OF THE CORDUROY

Corduroy (also referred to as rib cord) is definitely not something for your dad or granddad anymore, it is a fabric that is used a lot these days to give certain items a more sophisticated look. We like to use it in our collection because of its comfort and softness, as well as the cool retro image it has.

Corduroy is definitely not something for your
dad or granddad anymore,

Fun fact: they say the name ‘corduroy’ comes from the French ‘corde-du-roi’, which means ‘the cord of the King’. But – we hate to break it to you – this is a folk etymology.

WHAT MAKES SUNNY SHINE

This dress speaks for itself; it’s sophisticated
and feminine.

Nevertheless, a look like this can surely use a personal touch so just add some of your favourite statement accessories to your New Year's Eve get-up. Finish the look with stunner high heels to let everyone know you’re a fierce lady who’s ready for a party.

ON BLAZERS

The two-button blazer is the universal standard because its frame-lengthening properties complement virtually all builds, and it has an enduring, classic appeal.

When it comes to the buttons, it is an unwritten rule to only close the top one when you’re on the go, and to open your buttons once you sit down.

The bottom button must be left open at all times, which is more comfortable anyway.

FROM DAY TO NIGHT

Shiny items (like the tailored pants displayed here) are perfect to make
your outfit transition from day to night.

Gold, silver or aluminium; any piece that is spiced up with lurex is perfect for that party-all-night look.

The Maison Scotch collection holds several beautiful pieces that are enriched with lurex, a yarn that has a metallic appearance. Gold, silver or aluminium; any piece that is spiced up with lurex is perfect for that party-all-night look.

LEEBO’S SHOES ARE ON FIRE

A classic white shirt and dark skinny pants are asking for some shiny shoes. But how to make sure they will shine again after a serious party night? Best way to go: fire shine!

Step 1: Clean the shoes

Remove the dirt using a damp cloth.

Step 2: Ignite the shoe polish with a lighter

Hold your can of shoe polish upside down over a cigarette lighter. Allow the surface of the polish to catch fire. Quickly turn it right side to make sure none of the melting polish drips onto the floor.

Step 3: Apply the melted polish to the shoe

Dip a wet cloth into the melted polish and start applying it to the shoes, using small circular motions.

Step 4: Continue to apply light layers of polish until the shoes begin to shine

Use the same technique each time, dipping the damp cloth into the melted polish and working it evenly into the shoes.

Step 5: Heat the surface of the shoes with a lighter or hair dryer

Take your lighter (or hairdryer set to high heat) and run the flame over the entire surface of the shoe.

TOP IT UP

Go for a fashion statement this New Year's Eve and wear an 18th century inspired top hat. A long, long time ago people associated this item with the upper class. Nowadays it can be worn just as an extremely cool accessory, which also works very well when you’re invited to a theme party.

HOW ANOUK ADDS SOME ROCK ‘N ROLL TO A CLASSY LOOK

The little black dress is attributed to a 1920s design of Coco Chanel.
Rule of fashion is that this item is essential in every woman’s closet.

Add shiny tights, a leather clutch and some
sky-high stilettos.

This simple but elegant dress can easily be adjusted to the occasion and that is exactly why it’s such a must-have. Rock your New Year's Eve look and add shiny tights, a leather clutch and some sky-high stilettos.

WILD WEST MEETS FUNKY SEVENTIES

HI – HA! Pull out her western boots for a wild New Year's Eve and team a cowboy shirt with the worked-out gilet to complete this awesome look.

To add some more funky fever
– pair up with flair fit jeans.

A lesson on tweed

The original name of the tweed fabric is tweel, Scottish for twill. This name refers to it being woven in twilled rather than a plain pattern.

Once upon a time (about 200 years ago) a London merchant received a letter from a firm in the Scottish Borders council area about some tweels. He misinterpreted the handwriting, understanding it to be a trade name taken from the river Tweed. So, the goods were advertised as Tweed and the name has remained like this ever since.

Match a stand-out suit like this with a clean shirt
for the ultimate gentleman’s look.

The closely woven fabric has a sophisticated look, which makes a tweed suit perfectly appropriate to wear during festive occasions. Match a stand-out suit like this with a clean shirt for the ultimate gentleman’s look.

SEE HOW PARKER LOOKS ROCKER BUT PROPER

Are you ready for the rib cord comeback? This season it is a must-have for everyone. Plus, the rib cord pants are made from a super soft and comfortable fabric. This will be the perfect item to give a little gentleman’s twist to a boyish outfit like this. Match it with a rocker pull for a cool but dressy look.

Cherry on the cake: go for a well-styled hair part (this one day of the year it’s OK to go for a shiny wet look) and you are ready to face the family!

VERONIEK GOES FOR FEARLESS FUN

Leave an impression wherever you end up spending New Year's Eve and wear for a partyproof shirt with western piping details and bow in combination with an attention-grabbing gilet.

Opt for tailored slim fit pants to give your outfit a classy touch. And why not cut a fringe (or go for a fake one) to also add a little extra to your hairdo?

THE CREATION OF THE PRINT

The shirt that Ivan is wearing is part of the Sir Safari Pop collection by Scotch & Soda, which was all about gentleman’s items with lots of daring prints.

Blankets, umbrellas, handkerchiefs, paintings; anything can serve as the base of a new print design.

Within our design team we have special print designers, who are always creating the most amazing prints and patters inspired by travels to cities like New York, London and Tokyo where they visit local flea markets and antique stores for inspiration. FOLLOW THE PARTY CODE

Familiar with the embarrassing feeling of arriving totally underdressed on a party? Avoid these moments of awkwardness and make sure you’re up-to-date with the party dress code:

White Tie

The dressiest, most formal type of event. Long, very formal evening gowns are expected; gloves are optional.

BLACK Tie

Less dressy than white tie, but still quite formal. Choose from long gowns in satin or velvet; shorter knee-length dresses with glamorous heels; and dressed-up separates, like a beaded skirt and shell set.

CREATIVE BLACK Tie

Give your formal outfit a trendy twist. Go for a red-carpet-inspired dress by a hip designer.

COCKTAIL ATTIRE

Knee-length it is! A fun and festive look is allowed, lace or sparkly details for an elegant touch are definitely a go.

ELEGANT CASUAL

Combine a silk blouse with man-tailored-trousers and you’re ready to go!
